The Shocking Truth about LEDs

A Well Lit Money Saver

There is more to saving money while rving than buying cheaper gas. As Phil May and Andy McCaskey explain, Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lighting is another say to save you money in both the long run and short term even if the initial cost is greater.

In the long term LED bulbs can save you money because they last 33 times longer than your average light bulb while costing only around ten times as much in the check out line.

These light bulbs also take less battery power which will extend the life of your RV battery. LED lights also save your battery’s life by creating less heat. Because LED lights create less heat that means you don’t have to use your RV A/C as much and, as Texas Terry Cooper would tell you, your A/C gets power from the same battery that the rest of your unit does. That is a pretty cool bulb.

So what is the downside to LED’s? The initial cost is a little salty. The average inside LED cost is $20 and for the outside the cost is around $40. This can make it pricy to refit your whole RV at once. It can cost as much as $800 (excluding taillights) to replace every light bulb in your unit. While that is worth the cost of LEDs in the long run, that is a big price tag on the initial instillation.
