Memorial Day is just a few short weeks away, and families planning to start off the summer at RV campgrounds may want to start preparing now.

Memorial Day is just a few short weeks away, and families planning to start off the summer at RV campgrounds may want to start preparing now. AAA reports the amount of people traveling this Memorial Day weekend will be about 1.2 percent higher than last year. Not only does this mean you can expect traffic, but many campsites will probably fill up quickly, so the earlier you can reserve a location, the better.

Expect traffic on the highway

If you are planning a weekend getaway, be sure to take travel time into consideration. The AAA report indicates 88 percent of people traveling for the holiday are planning to do so by automobile. This means traffic will likely be heavier, especially if you are trying to reach a popular Memorial Day destination such as a coastal town or a lake. You can head out earlier or use a GPS or mobile app to help you find the best routes. There are a number of apps that provide live traffic reports and help you avoid congested highways.

Gas prices will likely remain high

The current national average cost for a gallon of gas is around $3.73 right now, which is lower than it has been in some time. However, the increased cost of fuel will encourage many travelers (about 47 percent) to cut corners elsewhere. AAA reports 65 percent of these travelers will cut back on entertainment and many will find alternative lodging to hotels, such as staying with relatives. Traveling in an RV is about 23 to 59 percent less expensive for families than other forms of vacations, according to a survey conducted by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. Couples can save between 11 and 46 percent when they vacation in an RV.

Stock up to avoid the crowds

Memorial Day weekend is a time when many people celebrate with parties and barbeques, which also means grocery stores will be crowded all weekend. You can stock up on supplies early. This way, you won't have to spend your vacation in traffic and fighting the crowds for the last pack of hot dog buns. Many RV campgrounds have general stores where you'll likely be able to find the things that slipped your mind when you were RV trip planning.

If your next vacation is going to take you through Idaho, you should be sure to stop and check out the Craters of the Moon National Monument.

If your next vacation is going to take you through Idaho, you should be sure to stop and check out the Craters of the Moon National Monument. This lava field, located just outside Arco, Idaho, is a natural wonder worth seeing, and there are a number of RV campgrounds and resorts nearby. However, if you're on a tight schedule and just want to stop by, you can drive alone the Seven-Mile Loop Road to see the park and be on your way.

How did the national monument get its name?

Craters of the Moon is not actually extraterrestrial, but a lava field formed tens of thousands of years ago. The U.S National Park Service states the lava field takes up 618 square miles and consists of a number of craters and other formations. The Seven-Mile Loop Road is a great way to see the many craters, lava rivers and other unique formations. There is a visitor center in the park where you can learn more about the different geological sights you will see. If you want to spend more time exploring the lava field, you can hike along the trails and visit the Coyote and Crescent Buttes, Echo Crater or the Broken Top cinder cone.

Where to stay

The Lava Flow Campground is open between May and October and has a few sites that are able to accommodate RVs. However, these sites do not provide any hookups, so travelers who need hookups or want other amenities can try their luck at nearby RV campgrounds. The Arco KOA and Moose Crossing camping sites are both just outside the park. Each site has full hookups, showers and other onsite amenities.

The Craters of the Moon National Monument is just off Interstates 15, 84 and 86, making it easy to get to whether you want to visit Idaho or are just passing through on your way to the West Coast or Nevada. You can spend a few days exploring the wilderness and learning about the craters or just drive through the park on your way to your next RV destinations. The loop doesn't take too long to complete and will certainly provide a scenic landscape for your trip.

Ensuring your RV is running properly and free of damages before your vacation can reduce the risk of breaking down on the road.

Ensuring your RV is running properly and free of damages before your vacation can reduce the risk of breaking down on the road. You should treat your motorhome as you would your car and have it checked out by a mechanic before you hit the road. There are a few things you can do on your own to get ready for your next big trip as well.

Perform a quick safety checklist prior to your trip

You should ensure everything is in working order inside the RV as well as under the hood. Make sure any onboard fire extinguishers are up to code and check the batteries in smoke detectors. You might also want to clean out the cooking vent hood to prevent the possibility of a grease fire, according to FunRoads.com. Check all the lights and make sure there's enough air in the tires.

Helpful hint: The air pressure marking on the tires indicates the maximum pressure they can handle, not the appropriate levels. This information can be found in the owner's manual of your RV.

Packing a just-in-case kit

Even if you make sure the RV is in good condition before a trip, it's always a smart move to be prepared for emergencies. Bring along a set of jumper cables, road flares and a flashlight in case your RV breaks down on the highway or runs out of juice while you're parked at RV campgrounds or parking lots. You might want to bring along a few tools for addressing minor repairs, such as an adjustable wrench, pliers and screwdrivers. A flat tire repair kit can also come in handy in a pinch.

DIY Tip: Duct tape is perfect for patching up leaky radiator hoses. However, this is just a temporary fix to help you get to a mechanic or at least off the highway. Any issues with the cooling system should be addressed by a professional as soon as possible.

Take precautions against potential problems

It is always a good idea to let someone know your travel plans in case of an emergency. You should also be prepared for severe weather conditions. Avoid parking under trees or in lowland areas that may be prone to flash floods during major storms.
